Authentic Leadership Can Re-energize You to Positively Impact Tier 1 Instruction Across Your School

Authentic leadership has a significant impact on the quality and effectiveness of Tier 1 instruction, defined as the core, universal teaching provided to all students within a Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS). Tier 1 instruction is designed to be evidence-based, inclusive, and responsive to diverse learners. Authentic leadership plays a critical role in creating the conditions necessary for this level of instruction to succeed.  

Authentic leadership is characterized by self-awareness, transparency, ethical decision-making, and a strong alignment between values and actions (Gavin, 2019). When school leaders model authenticity, they foster trust that encourages educators to engage openly in professional dialogue, reflect honestly on their instructional strengths and areas for growth, and implement research-based strategies with fidelity. In a Tier 1 context, this trust supports consistent, high-quality instruction across classrooms and reduces variability that can negatively affect student outcomes.  

One of the most important ways authentic leadership influences Tier 1 instruction is through the development of a shared instructional vision. Authentic leaders clearly communicate their commitment to student learning and equity, ensuring that Tier 1 practices align with curricular standards and the needs of all learners. By involving teachers in decision-making processes—such as curriculum adoption, instructional frameworks, and assessment practices- leaders reinforce collective ownership of Tier 1 instruction. This collaborative approach increases teacher buy-in and strengthens implementation.

“Having a leadership role in education can be quite challenging, especially when the world of education is always changing. Very recent research in Thailand reveals that authenticity in schools can have meaningful impacts on student outcomes. Those schools that use an authentic style of leadership can expect higher test scores and better attention rates according to Kulophas & Hallinger (2024). These schools allowed students to explore their own authentic selves as well. When students decided an activity did not match their interests, educators allowed them to change their schedules. Professional learning, which is essential for maintaining strong Tier 1 instruction, is another strong leverage point for authentic leadership. Leaders who are transparent about their own learning and growth normalize reflective practice and encourage teachers to engage in their own ongoing professional growth. This culture of learning promotes the use of data to inform instruction, differentiate within the Tier 1 setting, and address learning gaps before students require more intensive interventions. 

Finally, authentic leaders ensure that Tier 1 instruction is culturally responsive and accessible to all students by prioritizing ethical and equitable practices. By acknowledging diverse perspectives and addressing systemic barriers, leaders help teachers design instruction that meets varied academic and social-emotional needs. This initiative-taking approach strengthens Tier 1 instruction and reduces over-reliance on Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports which is key to successful MTSS implementation.

As you consider future leadership actions, remember authentic leadership positively impacts Tier 1 instruction by fostering trust, collaboration, shared vision, and professional growth. Through ethical, transparent, and values-driven leadership, schools are better equipped to deliver high-quality Tier 1 instruction that supports all students and promotes long-term academic success.
