Reconsidering Trauma

I have written in the past about my concern that when I heard that “everybody is traumatized,” a generalization that risks trivializing the genuine need for trauma care. On August 25, 2025, Columbia University Professor George Bonano reported in his Hidden Brain podcast that when schools overgeneralize about trauma, they risk protecting children from the reliance students need to survive in the outside world. He argues that not every conflict is traumatic and not every emotional insult requires therapy. Children, he argues, will only learn to be resilient when they encounter difficulties and deal with them. The broader issue is that emotional support resources are limited. The National Association of School Psychologists reports that fewer than 50% of schools have the number of social workers and psychologists necessary to support students.  Therefore, every over-diagnosis of trauma takes time from over-burdened staff members who need to attend to genuinely traumatized students and staff members.
