In this provocative new book (2025), THE FAMILY DYNAMIC: A Journey Into the Mystery of Sibling Success, by Susan Dominus, the author examines the families of exceptional siblings, from those who excelled in medicine, chess, politics, and other fields.
Some surprising findings:
The parents were not wealthy – in fact, they were preoccupied with work. It was the siblings who encouraged one another.
There was a persistent emphasis on cultural exposure from a young age – museums and concerts – even when they could not afford the price of admission, they would listen outside the theater to hear the music.
Exposure to other talented students who have a standard far higher than that in their regular public schools.
This is the opposite of the helicopter parents who attempt to supervise every element of their children's lives. The parents were busy, running restaurants and other businesses that left them little time to be the stereotypical “Little League Dad”—rather, these parents left their very high-achieving kids to succeed on their own without parental oversight.
It's a fascinating read and a cautionary tale for parents who think that micromanaging their kids' lives is the best strategy. Successful kids need to make mistakes and forge their own paths, not be aided by snowplow parents who remove every obstacle from their kids.
